We purchased this car in November 1999 Before we started looking we decided with this car we wanted one that was finished or almost finished so we could enjoy it right away instead of waiting 2 years for me to finish a "project" car.
After searching for about 6 months we found just what we wanted. New red paint, new engine and 4 speed but it needed to be finished. As soon as we saw her I knew she was the one. We trailered her the 3 hours to our home, drove her a few times before the snows came and then I had all winter to get her finished.
The bodywork, paint and drive train were finished but there was a lot of electrical and interior work to do. The paint needed to be rubbed out and there wasn't a spec of chrome other than what came from the factory.
I started getting the electrical up to par and also ordering some of the things to make her mine.
First up were the wheels and tires. We chose Weld "Fat 50" wheels and BFG TA Radials. - 15x8 with 255/60 in the rear - 15x7 with 225/70 in the front I went with 70's in the front because I wanted to have the same tire height front and rear.
Next up was the vanity plate. Wanted something it didn't take 5 minutes to figure out. You can see what I came up with. We love it, even small children notice it and say something when they walk by.
By spring we had her all ready and were really excited about the upcoming shows and cruise nights. This pic was taken at our first major show. Camaro Superfest 2000. The largest all Camaro show in the country. We were stunned when we took First Place in the 70-73 Street Class. This is a first class show all the way and is a must attend for the Camaro enthusiast. Can't wait for this year!
Our Z is definitly not a "trailer queen". But for the 650 mile drive to Penn for Camaro's at Carlisle 2000 we let her play one for a while. Carlisle is the premier car show arena in the US and we had a blast. We also managed to take home Second Place in the 70-81 Mild Modified Class. This pic shows us with some of the competition.
Without a doubt the best thing about owning a hot rod is the great people you get to meet. Here is a pic of me (the tall goofy one) and some great folks I keep tabs with on-line through the Second Generation Camaro Owners Group. We finally got to meet Frank and Sue and their beautiful 79Z in person at Carlisle. This is us with our awards.
